The program aims to increase the enrollment, persistence, and completion of targeted S.T.E.M. degree programs at Howard University. Additionally, this program addresses a significant national problem: the inability of many students, in particular minority students, to be adequately prepared for General Chemistry I. A cycle of failure may set in when students who are underprepared, are confronted with first-year Chemistry material. Failure to succeed in their beginning courses lessens the chance that students will successfully complete a science major and therefore unacceptably narrows their career choices.
